Obstetric Forceps are specialized obstetrical instruments that are used to reach inside the female vagina and grab the fetal head to pull it out during assisted vaginal delivery. They are employed for cases of obstetric complications including inadequate maternal contractions, Antepartum hemorrhage, and macrosomic baby or to expedite delivery in cases of maternal morbidity or mortality.
The Nagele Obstetrical Forceps are used to aid delivery of the baby during inadequate force by the mother or shoulder dystocia, breech delivery and prolonged labor to expedite the delivery. The instrument consists of two forceps attached via a lock to handles. The two jaws can be separated and are fenestrated for minimal tissue injury. The entire length of the instrument is 36 cm but is also available in a length of 40 cm. During delivery, the obstetrician inserts one blade and adjusts the curve of the jaw against the fetal head. She then inserts the second jaw into place and clicks the lock together to gently pull the baby out.
